Embracing her Celtic Roots, Emily Jean Flack Releases the New Sound Of Electro-Folk with EP ‘Throwing Shapes’

Through bridging the traditional sounds of her homeland in Ontario to those of her current home in Limerick, the new EP ‘Throwing Shapes‘ from Emily Jean Flack is perhaps her most accomplished work to date – showcasing her gorgeously pure vocals and the Celtic music she was raised with, whilst injecting cool electronic textures to create a genre-spanning mix that defies expectations and delivers on every level.  Produced by Belfast native Peter Wallace, and mixed by three-time Grammy Award winner David Bottrill, ‘Throwing Shapes’ also features guest performances by two Irish folk stars, whistle and flute player Brian Finnegan from the band Flook and guitarist Marty Barry.

“Although I come from a traditional instrumental folk background, I’ve always listened to so many other styles of music. And my own music has always been more personal, more modern and more contemporary. Being in Ireland is wonderful in the sense that it’s so culturally rich, but there is a ferocity and sense of independence within the music. It’s not cute or quaint. It’s quite raw and organic. Ireland has offered me an environment to openly make the music that moves me”

Harnessing an impeccable musical lineage as the daughter of Denise Flack – a member of the groundbreaking Celtic-pop band Leahy, Emily Jean Flack grew up immersed in traditional Irish music and dance. Emily cites her mother as her main influence and inspiration, with her family experiences being what has given her both an undeniable stage presence and an aptitude for performance. Her first public rendition was at an Irish Ceilidh near Peterborough, Ontario where she sang “Katie” by Mary Black, accompanied by her aunt on piano. Despite this being a small performance, this clearly had a profound effect of her maturing musically at an early age, and she had been quoted as saying that this moment felt in some small way that she was following in her mother’s footsteps. Her love of ceilidhs and festivals meant that her eventually uprooting to Ireland was a transition was one that was both effortless and empowering.

Through honing her craft while studying for a Masters in Traditional Music at the University of Limerick, vocalist, songwriter, musician and dancer Emily has spent her life surrounded by music and musicians, but has always harnessed a keenness to express her influences in a way which was entirely her own. Despite the dynamic and joyous feel to her music, there is an inherent degree of heartbreak behind the veil, which emotionally, allows the tracks to feel more wholesome and real. With the spirit of the Emerald Isle permeating her material, Emily also incorporates jazz, pop and Americana influences to create a sound that she describes as progressive folk. Lyrically, the concept of love is explored in all its various forms, with all of her songs coming from a degree of personal experience – Love is hard, love is beautiful, love is worth the fight.

The Dark Road to Deliverance – ‘I Gave My Life’ Video Unveils Berislav’s Catharsis Trilogy

Performance art offers a unique introspective into the depths of human creativity. In terms of potential, most of us are blessed with an array of possibilities, but some are left with regret that these aren’t acted upon until it’s perceived that its too late. Berislav Sertić is a Croatian dancer, actor, model and singer has embarked to demonstrate these facets combined in his incredible video to the track ‘I Gave My Life’ – the first video in what his to be his Catharsis trilogy, which will the cover keystones of human existence – Life, Death, and Sex.

It was the emergence of a collaboration between himself with ex-Soul II Soul James Perri (aka Jimi Polo) – known for his work with David Guetta and Daft Punk, that has since laid the foundation for his signature sound that is laced heavily in 1980’s electro-pop. The artistic direction the pair have now taken has seen Berislav’s exemplary levels of creativity take form. It was after signing a record deal with a record deal with Croatia records in 2015 that the lavish theatrical style for his videos first emerged.

Already by the age of 9, Berislav had developed a love for dancing and attended the Tihana Škrinjarić school of dance, before a move to Austria saw his talent for the art develop further. Engaging in a pursuit of various disciplines saw him embark on numerous project with Croatian music artists as well as participating in theatrical productions such as Hair. Following an inherent determination to be the very best at everything he was involved with, he moved briefly to Los Angeles to attend the Sanford Meisner school of acting, which led to leading acting roles in TV series and commercials.

Matt Boroff reveals his ‘Grand Delusion’ in new video

For a true insight into a songwriting mind, check out Matt Boroff’s new video discussing the concepts and ideas that drive his new album, Grand Delusion.

It can take a long time to fully understand what an album is about, and the cryptic nature of Matt’s lyrics would unlikely change this, but his new record is one worth delving into. With a distinctly current agenda, addressing some of the society’s most pressing issues at this time, Grand Delusion  challenges our perceptions of how we see the world and pushes us to question it.

Matt’s new record has been put together with the help of Alain Johannes from 11AD studios, Jack Irons (former Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam drummer) and Mark Lanegan. Grand Delusion is out May 5th.

Bristol Folk band ‘Apple of My Eye’ are set to sail folk scene with new album ‘Seven Tides’

‘Apple Of My Eye’ are one of the most exciting acts around at the moment and they have just  announced the release of new album ‘Seven Tides’, due out 1st December.
The London lads are originally from the historic maritime city of Bristol and their songs draw inspiration from both cities and from the sea, a theme that runs throughout their second album. Their engaging storytelling style and four part harmonies explore tales of love, loss, adventure and ruin.
You may spotted the guys at a festival this summer as they played the, Tall Ships Festival Greenwich, Secret Garden Party, Wilderness and headlining Exile festival in Sheffield.
The band describe their music as “brand new old songs” and collectively generate all their own material drawing on personal experiences and carefully arranging the music on the guitar, bouzouki, violin, double bass, mandolin and harmonica.

Kit Massey (Violin) and Phil Cornwell (Bass) are both full time professional musicians. Cornwell is the musical director of West End musical “The Scotsboro Boys’’ and Massey  was formally a violinist with the Santiago Philamonia in Chile and has worked as a session musician with artists such as Emile Sande, Dizzie Rascal, Muse and Jamie Cullum. Arran Glass (Vocals and Guitar) and Alex Scott (Mandolin) are both professional Actor-Musicians and Puppeteers who perform and compose the music for a variety of theatre and television. Chris (Bouzouki), Dan (Harmonica) and Ellie Rusbridge (Vocals) are all siblings and come from a rich folk music heritage as their parents met in a folk club and still perform in their own folk band Thornbridge.

Adam Protz Releases Intangible EP – ‘Movements’

Hailing from St Albans after a period of studying in Sheffield, Adam Protz has had several years to perfect his craft of composing. Using delicate piano melodies and intricate instrumentals, Adam Protz has created his beautiful EP ‘Movements’, consisting of four alluring and exquisite tracks. In the past, Adam has written music for films, animated shorts, a dance show, an educational DVD and even a brewery documentary!

Protz has been writing music since the tender age of fifteen and began his journey into music writing heavy rock songs with soft orchestral bridge sections as a contrast, this developed into a desire to write for Hollywood movies. However, after listening to minimalistic meditative piano music, written by the likes of Ludovico Einaudi, Adam soon discovered that he was much more suited to creating emotive music in which he could incorporate his own personality and spirituality.
The lack of lyrics in the music leaves it up to the listener to interpret the piece as they wish. It provokes an emotional reaction and is also incredibly relaxing. The ‘Movements’ EP is proof that lyrics aren’t a necessity to provoke powerful sentimental thoughts
Protz aims to inspire relaxation and offers the perfect setting for escaping to through his music. A firm believer that the world is over-obsessed with Smart-phones and social networks, Protz encourages listeners, from all walks of life, to return to the roots and escape with him into his musical world of beautiful, elegant minimalism.
‘Movements’ is due for release on the 30th November.

Rollys Syndicate are the Warwickshire based band, that are mixing contemporary blues and soul. They are now set to release a new album for the summer. Working together, Milli aids Roland with moving lyrics, whilst Ro’ brings the guitar backing.
Their music has that open air quality you only reall see in the Jazz genre. With great guitar playing and memorable lyrics, the band congregates together; to make a thoroughly enjoyable collection of moving and expressive tracks.
After a long period of co-operation with the band, Milli could no longer commit to the long term vision of the group. However, in honour of the bands history together, the Roland Syndicate decided to dedicate their debut album to Milli and her lyrical talents.
Fortunately, she happily agreed to collaborate on a short term basis. It’s for this reason that most of the lyrics in the album draw their influence from both the bands everyday life and Milli’s personal journey to this point.
The band has now picked a new vocalist from a selection of more than 30 applicants. Her name is Natalie Brown and the band tells us that she is as good as Milli!
Her background includes being the lead vocalist in the original band, StoneSoulUK from February 2006 to October 2013 (writing and performing mainly original material, as well as cover material). Natalie has also lent her vocal talents to the cover band ‘the Bottle’, whilst studying at university (1997-2000). Ontop of all this she has performed at major west midland venues such as The Yardbird, Victoria Square and The Malthouse.

Natalie Brown’s influences include Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys and Michael Jackson.
Hungarian born, Roland produced the album as part of achieving a degree at Staffordshire University. He has showcased his talents at many different live gigs such as: The Public (West Bromwich), Hare & Hounds (Birmingham), Bulls Head (Birmingham), Mixing Bowl Theatre (Birmingham). Roland said that he has played many live gigs but for him the biggest event was at the Sziget Festival.
On-top of these live shows, the group has also been featured on the ‘BBC Introducing’ series, played on Radio Warwickshire, Airplay & The Musical Journey show (live), Tweets & web mentions (Clay Lowe/SoulCuzer radio presenter), Radio Plus – Airplay & Live Room Session.
Through the years, Milli and Roland have developed a good understanding of the musical influences they wanted to follow, and thus developed a winning musical chemistry. Roland’s professionalism and creativity seemed to work well with Milli adding her soulful tones, as she is not only a talented vocalist, but also an amazing songwriter with a history in Drama and Literature.
Benny (drummer) & Luke (bass player) were both attracted to the the unique mix of Soul, contemporary Blues and a touch of jazzy elements, they both relate to in their own personal musical backgrounds.
Luke, the bass player in the band was born in Leamington Spa in 1992, picking up his first guitar at the age of 11. It was after watching the video of November Rain that Luke’s hobby turned into a lifelong passion. He has played from many names such as the African Kora players to Art rock bands and anyone else that would give him his next step into the starlight. His talent developed quickly due to dedication and his love to the art.
Benny, the band’s drummer, plays several styles including jazz, rock, blues and funk. He played in jazz trios, big bands, rock and punk bands through the years. He has recently played in the Boogie snakes and the Holly Perkins Bands. Making appearances on many different jam sessions around Oxfordshire. Bennys drum kit is a vintage Yamaha kit from 1973, Yamaha Vintage Series snare, Zildjian cymbals with Evans heads. The drummer says that his influencers are Dennis Chambers, Ed Thigpen and Zsolt Mike.
The Unique combination of styles and influences Rolly’s Syndicate produce demonstrates the colourful background of the group members, Roland’s Passion for blues from a Hungarian Background, Beni’s Amazing talent and vast experience playing with various bands and Luke’s alternative veins and passion for Jazz & World Music.

Den Haag – 'Haunted', taken from 'Bleak Unknown' album

Den Haag Bleak UnknownOwing a clear debt to the New Wave 80s rock of The Cure, Den Haag are a four piece based in the South of the UK. The track ‘Haunted’ is taken from their debut full length album ‘Bleak Unknown’, a follow up to first EP ‘Trials & Tributes’.
Typical of their style, this is a track built around a solid drum and bass line that kicks the whole thing off. From there, the guitar lines and raw vocal are the cherry on top – a looping, rasping pair of melodies that intertwine and entertain.

FALDHamburg’s FUCK ART, LET’S DANCE! release their debut album Atlas on 28th April 2014 via Audiolith. The album channels, youth, wonderment and discovery, about young hearts trading in security for the unknown – a life of possibilities and adventure – something we all yearn.

The band’s name – FUCK ART, LET’S DANCE! – speaks for itself. Whilst listening to Atlas you can imagine club kids from Dalston, London to Williamsburg, New York dancing carefree in the darkest, coolest corners of some of the best underground clubs, music pulsing, the band’s name emblazoned onto loose fitted vests, graffitied luminously across brick walls – FUCK ART, LET’S DANCE! have the capacity to start a movement.
Opening with title track ‘Atlas’, the band evoke the feeling of the joyous abandon of youth but FALD bring the intelligence of Foals whilst maintaining that edge. Progressing forward, a more electronic vibe seeps in with tracks like ‘Home’, channeling an early Friendly Fires sound. There’s a wistfulness about Atlas though, something that East India Youth fans will definitely find appealing but they never slow the pace, they aim to bring you up and keep you there right until the very last track.
Although Atlas is the band’s debut, they’ve been hard at work during their inception in 2009. FALD literally formed from a need to make people dance, tired of watching ‘gig zombies’ stand around at local live shows, they wanted to inspire people to move. Before they had even released a record, they played over 200 gigs earning a reputation for their upbeat, danceable performances. They soon found themselves flying across the Atlantic to SXSW, impressing audiences with their international sound, which led to their 2012 EP Lovers Arcade.
With Atlas, this addictive four-piece will make you dance, sweat and smile – they embody both the fun and introspective elements of youth and have translated them into thirteen perfect tracks.

DEPARTMENT M – Self-titled mini album due Monday 16th December on Fierce Panda Records

DEPTMDepartment M announce the release of their self-titled mini album through fierce panda on Monday 16th December. The Leeds-based quartet fully explore the expansive indie/electronic sound present on their acclaimed previous singles ‘I’ll Fax You An Apoogy’ (Black Boutique) and ‘The Second Prize’ (Too Pure).
The Truth: DEPARTMENT M come from Leeds in the North of Englandshire. Ostensibly a creative vehicle for one Owen Brinley, they have spent the past year cautiously, yet crunchingly, developing a fascinating, fizzing sound which combines the heroic synths of yesteryear with a cutting contemporary electro sensibility. Depeche Mode, Air, Talk Talk, Cabaret Voltaire and – of course – ELO are just some of the names referenced in their company, and fair play too – Owen Brinley is decidedly not a man afraid of a saxophone solo. Bolstered by a four person-strong live line-up this is an act which can straddle the divide between the shiny retro-obsessed Classic Pop magazine and the cool dark alleyways of modern East London.
They have previous, do Department M: in March they released the ‘I’ll Fax You An Apology’ / ‘Black Boutique’ single on local label Hide & Seek. In June they released the ‘The Second Prize’ / ‘Absentia’ single through Too Pure. This handy Department M mini-album brings together most of the songs on those first two releases, throws in future single ‘Miscellany’ – due out in January 2014 – adds a couple more toweringly sombre tunes and waits for the light to come pouring out of the sky. It is being released on the monumentally illogical date of December 16th because a) a similar version of the EP is being released on Rallye Records in Japan in November, b) because we could and c) because it’s a timely way to end the first chapter in the Department M story.
So how did we get here? Legend already has it that Owen’s career took a completely different turn when he put down his guitar and picked up a Roland Juno-60, the classic keyboard that defined the sound of the likes of ’80s hair bears A Flock Of Seagulls, and all of a sudden his nascent electronic influences burst to the forefront of his writing. No less interestingly, his career as DJ and binge drinker in several Leeds nightclubs had him suffering from the onset of Hyperacusis, an acute over-sensitivity to certain frequency ranges. Something to keep his well-developed tinnitus company, but not something to keep him out of the studio.
These conditions over time created a tension which arguably informed the lyrical and musical elements which saw Owen mould the Department M sound alongside local long term collaborator James Kenosha. Unsurprisingly, phrases like “abrasive beauty” and “brutalist pop economy” tend to be bandied about Department M’s music, for theirs is a world of overdriven hip-hop drum loops crashing against smooth swathes of analogue synthesiser, where the beefiest of rhythms collide with the sweetest of vocals.
