Roxy Music, Tom Waits and Rodgers & Hammerstein Go Camping in France with Bill Magill

Concepts centred around jovial get-together in bars easily conjure certain images of bawdy behaviour, highly-charged raucousness, but most of all, togetherness. Last Night at the Ha-Ra is a ‘rock-drama’ concept from American songwriter Bill Magill that is centred around the tales and revelations of a group of regulars of the Ha-Ra bar in sunny San Francisco.

Similar to the kind of characters you might discover on classic Tom Waits albums from the early 70s, this record carries with it an honest feeling of camaraderie – people banding together and sharing their innermost while exploring deep emotional themes such as how far one is willing to go for the woman they love, and even a heartfelt exploration of assisted suicide.

Firstly having recorded the demos for each track in his home studio, Magill then shares the tracks with Vivid Stage Productions – whom he is the creative force behind alongside keyboardist David Dower and also Russell Cottier the North West UK based production specialist who also worked on this record.

Now hailing in Aix-en-Provence, in the south of France, the American born Magill, has assembled musicians from Britain, France, America and Australia to flesh out the reality of the narrative – each of them bringing something of their native influence to enhance the record. As well as Magill’s core band at Vivid Stage, a host of invited guests such as Pete Thomas – drummer for Elvis Costello and the Attractions and Daniel Mille – the award-winning French accordionist, have contributed.

Having now lived in France for over 8 years, the record has a distinctively French flair to it and also features vocals in the language from his significant other. Nuance and diversity are real strengths of the recording, and little details such as authentic sounds of glasses being ‘cheers’d’, which were recorded at the actual venue, lie at the heart of its essence.

Journey from the underground – Andi McErnest first star to shine from new label: The Uprise

There’s no escaping the excitement and anticipation for what is to become the first release from The Uprise – a new record label enterprise founded by NFL superstar and BBC Sport pundit Osi Umenyiora. Here we can witness an initial glimpse at the various twists and turns that have given rise to their premier starlet Andi McErnest and his lead track – ‘Baby Ur Cool’.

Andi McEarnest

Andi McEarnest

The story here began with humble roots as Andi (known as A.M) found creative means of expression through poetry after the tragic loss of his father around the turn of the millennium. It wasn’t long before his passion took a musical turn as he worked with producers for a number of months to make a sequence of initial demos as the foundations of his career took form.

After having moved back to his native Nigeria, and then back to the UK, A.M continued his venture into music and, under the name Authentiq, signed with underground record label ‘Titans Entertinment’. Alongside this, Andi also managed a degree of success as a budding entrepreneur, launching his own fitness company ‘Oneinamillionbillion’ in London, and later partnering his brother at ‘The McErnest Company’ based in Lagos, Nigeria where he became their first music artist in 2015.

Listen here: The Uprise – Andi McErnest

The Uprise label has embarked on its own mantra, which looks to combine Brazilian-inspired street sound with UK grime to fulfil their vision of a Motown-style brand that draws upon the talent of their own roster of in-house writers and producers.  This draws very much upon an uplifting idea that tries to connect people of all cultures and backgrounds with music as a means of universal understanding.

On this basis, collaboration between this particular label and artist needs no further explanation.

A.M draws on inspiration from a lengthy roster of 90’s and contemporary RnB and hip hop including Sean Combs, Pharrell Williams and Fela Kuti. Continuing in the vein of catchy electro RnB the track itself features a chilled, seductive half beat – easily accessible and looks set to saturate the sound waves in clubs across the UK very soon.

UK Grime artist swaps gang culture for the studio, aims to inspire others to change their lives

Hat-White2048Now one of UK grime’s most promising artists, midlands MC Fangol was in a very different place in 2012. Embroiled in UK gang culture at the time, Fangol hit a turning point at age 19 when two of his friends – one in Nottingham, one in London – were shot and killed.
Just two years later, Fangol tells the motivational story of how he’s turned his life around with debut album/mixtape ‘Wake Up’.
With lyrics inspired by his colourful transition from UK street life to musical ambition and success, he is an artist who is working to prove that with the right motivation people can get work to get themselves out of difficult situations. By focussing fully on the music and film industry in the last couple of years, Fangol has gone from living in danger every day to producing some of the most promising Hip-Hop in the industry at the moment.
Typified by single ‘Things Have Changed’, which you can watch the video for here: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK2tSk1RUxW0fCYAXDWDJMg?feature=watch&hd=1
Set for individual release on 18th April – his music blends underground grime sounds with R&B and hip-hip styles, specialising in tight melodies and rhythms. Rooted in the reality of his previous situation, the overall tone is an uplifting one, aiming to inspire others in difficult situations that they can change their path with the right motivation and positive action.
