PRIME SINISTER

Album artwork for the upcoming album ‘Patient Zero’ by Prime Sinister

Prime Sinister is an innovative hip-hop artist from West London, who is combining the styles and sounds from rap and grime music that inspired him throughout his childhood with his own creative method of lyrical rhyming. Prime Sinister is breaking new ground with his own rap style creation: ‘syllablism’, which can be defined simply as the consecutive use of rhyming syllable patterns. The lyrical style constructs a symmetrical sequence, taking on a life of its own it encapsulates perfectly the themes of a new world that run throughout the album. Prime Sinister’s ‘syllablism’ is demonstrated in new single ‘Prime Time’. Speaking about the meaning and lyrics of ‘Prime Time’ he says: ‘Prime Time’ is the fifth track on the album. It’s produced by Muckaniks, who’s someone I’ve wanted to work with for years. I love his production work, especially on ‘Face The World’ by Rye Shabby, so I told him I needed a beat like that, as opposed to a beat like ‘Revvin’ by Ocean Wisdom and Dizzee Rascal, which is one of his more grime-sounding beats. There are multiple stories told in the song, but I mostly used my imagination. If there was a part that I felt particularly resonated with me, it would be this section in the second verse: “He spewed a bluish green, fluid like his truant schemes, clueless, he, moved upon the cupids that the jewelers clean/ So like the jewellers plea to drool upon the ghoulish sea of rudeness, he would use his prudish cruelness to imbue and please/ He’s on a looting spree of fruitlessness and prudency, shooting me, and brewing my pursuers into bluish tea’.

KELSEY

Get ready for Valentines Day with this anti-valentines day track set to be released on the 14th of February by up and coming American pop starlet Kelsey. Lyrically, the track Nobody alludes to the haunting experience of being lost to the memory of a loved one and feeling like a stranger to someone you once knew so well. It is a ghost story, speaking of the power that haunting memories of a lost lover can have. Kelsey has always been inspired by music from a young age and has expressed how the music that could instantly take hold of her mood and emotions were the songs that stuck with her the most. The captivating words of such songs are what motivates Kelsey with her songwriting today. So far Kelsey hasn’t got any music released, but for a teaser into the behind the scenes and what to expect from Kelsey can be seen in a short documentary released on YouTube:

The Nave Blues attempt to ‘Possess you’ with their take on the classic blues.

Four piece Norwegian band The Nave Blues have a sound that takes what you love about traditional blues rock and alternative rock and melded it together, all apparent in track ‘Possess You’.

The blues revivalists who have already covered and released what is considered an epic rendition of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Thank You’ are showing they mean business when it comes to reviving a genre as legendary as the Blues.

Armed with the authentic instruments, the four piece have nailed a sound that is both contemporary and pays homage to the genre. It couldn’t get any better with a harmonica player such as Nave Pundik, who opens the track with a blistering solo.

‘Possess You’ is a thoughtful blend of contemporary rock and traditional blues, though leaning more towards blues rock as opposed to delta or traditional blues. The song definitely has an alternative rock feel to it akin to Soundgarden, almost.

The song takes from the alternative sound as well as obvious influence Led Zeppelin, where the song shines is its dynamic changes, what starts of subtle proceeds to blast the listener with some catchy riffs.

‘Possess You’ also takes advantage with its mix, the raw aesthetic brings out the most in the track, particularly the harmonica solo which defines the grittiness that is accustomed with Blues Rock.

Overall, ‘Possess You’ is a great track that blends both traditional blues rock and alternative rock into a familiar package, whilst not shying away from showing off the sound that The Nave Blues have crafted.

Music Maker.jpg

We’re all about the songwriters here at Songwriter Spotlight and it’s we’re happy to hear that the new music competition platform, Salute Music Makers, is too!

Having launched back in April for contestants to upload their tracks, Salute has been growing its ever expanding empire, building bridges with notable partners including UNILAD, GRM Daily, Tenement TV and events company Continental Drifts. As a result, Salute have been able to get rid of the £20 per track entry fee that they initially instated.

Having always aimed to empower the grassroots songwriters of this world, this has been a huge step for the platform who are now able to offer their unprecedented £50,000 prize to a wider audience.

Feargal Sharkey, who you may remember as lead singer of The Undertones, is fronting the competition, he noted: ‘The level of support and encouragement we have received from the industry since launching our competition has been truly extraordinary. Thanks to the support of our partners, Salute is now in the enviable position to make entry absolutely, 100%, free. Yet again Salute is leading the way in providing proper support and encouragement for the next generation of great British talent. Now is your chance to win a £50,000, no strings attached cash prize and entry is free. One small challenge: just write the best song anyone has ever heard!’
