70’s Music Royalty Crack Of Dawn Bring The Love Of Funk To A New Generation

Outselling the funk reign of Earth, Wind and Fire in their home country of Canada, 70’s band Crack Of Dawn are a funk force to be reckoned with. Having released ‘Spotlight’ in 2017, an album recorded over several years that encapsulates all the smooth RnB and silky soul that the band are known best for, the band have unveiled masterful new mix of their album track ‘Ol’ Skool’.

A pioneering history that isn’t known by all, after being discovered by Otis Redding’s producer in the 70’s, the Canadian collective were the first black band to be signed by a major label (CBS) and were predicted big things by the likes of Billboard and more.

To accuse Crack of Dawn of being a collective of experienced musicians would be putting it lightly. With members such as guitarist and producer Carl Harvey who has been the lead-guitarist with Toots & the Maytals sharing in their Grammy win in 2004, Rupert Harvey founder of Canada’s most successful reggae band Messenjah and bassist Charles Sinclair who has played with Al Green, Crack of Dawn have no shortage of experience with music royalty.

Returning to already established fans from their 70’s reign, Crack Of Dawn have also opened a gateway for following of a new generation to discover the euphoric bliss that funk undeniably brings.

Jak Chantler prepares to don his ‘Shell Suit’ in his latest release with Short Sharp Scratch.

Jak Chantler of former Kerrang’s ‘Best Unsigned Band’ Kingskin is prepare for the launch of his new project Short Sharp Scratch, with the release of ‘Shell Suit’ and the upcoming EP of the same name.

With Short Sharp Scratch, Chantler is stepping away from the alternative rock sounds of Kingskin and has crafted a soulful pop sound that juxtaposes his last musical outfit.

Writing new tunes since before Kingskins break-up, Chantler has also enjoyed success working alongside Charlie Andrew of Alt J and Madness fame and has also had high profile guitar performances in front of the likes of James Corden, Rick Astley & Gordon Ramsey.

With ‘Shell Suit’, Chantler has crafted a sound that is initially a throwback to the classic soulful-funky sound of the 70’s and 80’s akin to Chaka Khan. Yet the song instantly finds its place among recent pop classics such as Childish Gambino and his latest release to the likes of indie-pop sounds from Haim.

The engaging instrumental is accompanied by powerful vocals that really drive the soul of the song home whilst giving it a contemporary touch.

The song is a charming nostalgia trip to fans of the party anthems of old yet is also a fresh re-imagining with a modern take; yet the song remains authentic both the soul and pop influences of this track.

Whilst the track & EP releases next month, you can check out a teaser in the form of a live performance at Abbey Road here;

Short Sharp Scratch’s debut EP Shell Suit releases on the 15th of September, for now you can keep up to date with Short Sharp Scratch on the social network links below;

Track Review: ‘Borrowed Words’ by Luna Blue

Brighton’s indie troupe Luna Blue prepare for the release of their debut E.P. Nightjar giving listeners a taste with their new single ‘Borrowed Words’.

The upcoming released is inspired by the tragic loss of a friend who was killed by a drunk driver. The band have since performed with a live orchestra and raised money for the friends favorite charity; Nordoff-Robbins.

The first single to be released off of the E.P is a funk-infused indie anthem titled ‘Borrowed Words’ focused around the topic of saying or doing something to please another.

The song opens with the familiar indie texture fans of the genre will know, but with a touch of that choppy funk sound on the guitars, giving off a Chili Peppers vibe – with a strong falsetto that the guitar accompanies, instantly creating an upbeat – dance like tonality. The song is also opened by the chorus hook, which is a combination of the strong falsettos and vocalist Tom High’s strong deliverance.

The verses are backed  by strong, powerful vocalists which do not hold back and are given a chance to show what they can do. Along with intricate and funky basslines, which hold their own, filled with stops which add to the dynamic and pacing of the song.

Halfway through the tune we are treated to a breakdown filled with anticipation, thought out through rests, and gives a refreshing turn to the song – and then concludes with the final verse, along with Ryan Wellman putting his stamp on the song with a rock solo that maintains the upbeat personality the song has.

Aussie four piece Velshur precede stunning debut EP with single ‘Spanish Sound’

Single out June 6th, soon to be followed by self titled debut EP and EU/UK tour
Velshur HD BeachA combination of funk rock, pop and soul, four piece Velshur are set to explode onto British shores this summer. Having just been to the UK and EU for some debut shows, they are now set for their first international release and will be returning to the UK and E.U in September!
One of the hardest working bands on the Australian circuit, a combination of residencies and touring saw them play 96 gigs over the four months of the Aussie snow season, very quickly building their fanbase and a reputation for performing their brand of soul warming funk rock. They are most often compared to Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Dandy Warhols and The Strokes.
In the months since, the band have been working equally hard to put together their first 4 track EP, to be introduced in early June with the debut single ‘Spanish Sound’.

Watch the video trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AplXvhl9d2g
The track is a bombastic, slow build funk rock song with solid rhythms, basslines and guitar riffs that work together to support a rasping rock vocal. It’s all wrapped around a huge, hooky chorus that leaves little wonder as to why Velshur delighted hundreds of fans night after night during their Winter residencies.
The single and EP were put together under the watchful dials of Grammy nominated engineer Blake Eiseman, who has worked with the likes of James Brown to Beyonce, Justin Beiber, Pink to Pearl Jam and a number of other big-name artists, with initial production help from Nicholas Wilson, who has recently worked with Wolfmother and toured with Seasick Steve and John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin . Once it’s out fans around the globe will undoubtedly be tuning in and dancing to their much anticipated debut release.

Caribbean songwriter Lateefah to release ‘Love Me Through’ single April 18th

Neo-soul diva looks to build on success in her home country

St. Lucian beauty currently living in London, Lateefah is a soulful singer-songwriter who, having come to the UK to study her craft at University, is now looking to make it the first international music scene she breaks into.
The soulful single ‘Love Me Through’, produced by London based KING, is released on April 18th – an excellent introduction to her smooth vocal and laid back electronic soul sound. Having sang in church from a young age, many of her songs are pages from her diary influenced by her relationship with God and situations she’s had to deal with.
Recorded in St. Lucia, the pair put together the single and upcoming album over a very productive couple of weeks on the island, including some work with St. Lucia’s top reggae artist Semi. The music has made her a star there – seeing her top the charts on Reverb Nation – and she is now looking to continue that momentum in Britain.
Lateefah’s path into music was decided as young as three years of age, when her determination to succeed was typified by her relentless practicing to hit the right notes in the song ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’. Going over and over until she got it right. Once she had, she never looked back.
In the years since, she has dedicated herself to writing as well as teaching music to young children at the southern branch of the St. Lucia School of Music.
